How week numbers work

The week number tells you where you are in the year, counted in weeks instead of days or months. WeekYear uses ISO 8601, the international standard: weeks run Monday to Sunday, and week 1 is the week containing January 4 — equivalently, the week with the year's first Thursday. That rule means the first days of January can still belong to the last week of the previous year (and late December days can belong to week 1 of the next year), which keeps every week exactly seven days with a single, unambiguous number.

Because 365 days ÷ 7 leaves one day over, a year always has 52 full weeks plus one or two days. Most years therefore have 52 numbered weeks, and roughly every 5–6 years the alignment produces a week 53. If you plan payroll, sprints, or budgets by week, those 53-week years matter — see the 53-week payroll year and how many weeks in a year.

Not everyone counts the same way: the US convention starts weeks on Sunday and calls the week with January 1 "week 1", which can put its number one ahead of the ISO number. If a week number from a colleague or an app looks off by one, that's almost always why — week start conventions explains the differences and this guide shows how to turn week numbers on in Google, Outlook, and Apple calendars.

Week number FAQ

What week is it right now?

It is currently week 29 of 2026 by ISO 8601 rules — the week running Jul 13 – Jul 19, 2026. The number at the top of this page is computed live from your device's clock, so it is always correct in your time zone.

How is the week number calculated?

WeekYear uses the ISO 8601 standard: weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week that contains January 4 (equivalently, the week with the year's first Thursday). This is the system used across Europe and in most software and logistics contexts. See the ISO week guide for the full rules.

How many weeks are in a year?

An ISO year has 52 or 53 weeks. 2026 has 53 weeks. A calendar year always contains 52 full weeks plus 1 extra day (2 in leap years), which is why a 53rd numbered week appears every 5–6 years. Details in how many weeks in a year.

Why might my calendar show a different week number?

Calendars set to a Sunday (US) or Saturday week start count weeks differently and can be one week off compared with the ISO number. Excel's default WEEKNUM function does the same. See week start conventions and week numbers in Excel.

Is the week number the same as the fiscal or work week?

Often, but not always. Many companies use "work week" (WW) numbers identical to ISO weeks, while others run 4-4-5 fiscal calendars that drift from ISO numbering. If a colleague quotes a fiscal week, confirm the calendar — our fiscal weeks guide explains the systems.

What is the week number format YYWW?

YYWW is a compact week code: two-digit year + two-digit week, so today is 2629. It is common on electronics date codes and in manufacturing. All formats are covered in week number formats.
